Do you have a Barney fan in your house? Looking for an educational video for a fun way to introduce numbers, shapes and letters to your little one? Released on July 12, 2011, the new Barney 1-2-3 Learn DVD might be just what you were looking for.
The new DVD is filled with Barney and his friends having a fun adventure discovering shapes, numbers and letters! The packaging states, “Join Baby Bop™ as she discovers that counting can lead to hidden treasures and that there’s a carnival of shapes and colors for all to enjoy. And BJ™ uses the alphabet to help Riff™ get ready for his music concert in the park. Barney can’t wait to show you that shapes, numbers and letters are the ticket to fun and friendship!”
My 3 year old has never been one to enjoy dancing and singing, so generally he’s not very intrigued with many children’s shows. He was watching for a few minutes, but he was more interested in his train table and cars than the TV.
My 18month old, however, likes to sing back to the TV (or, as long as there is a rhythm, he’ll even ‘move’ to dishwasher). This was his first time watching a Barney show, and I could tell he really enjoyed it. We have a board book that we read at night that is all about shapes, so when Barney was singing about circles and squares, my little guy would point to the screen. I like that it reinforced to him what we had been reading at night. As he grows, I’m hoping he’ll connect the numbers and letters with what he does day-to-day.
The boys also liked that there were toddlers and preschoolers singing “This little piggie” and playing musical instruments. Both boys just froze as they watched their peers dancing around to the song. I think it was a nice little diversion/pace change during the show to hold my little one’s attention longer.
Aimed at preschoolers aged 1-5, Barney airs on PBS KIDS® and Sprout®. You can also become a fan of Barney on Facebook.
