When I think of salads, two images come to my mind: 1) the amazing salads served in restaurants and 2) the boring versions we eat at home.
In one respect, I think I have given up with the salads we eat at home. My husband is a rather picky eater (gee… wonder where my kids get that from?) and so his idea of a salad is some romaine lettuce, carrots, olives and croutons with Italian dressing. Yup, that’s it. No fruit. No cheese. No baby greens. These same ingredients have made up our salads for years. Yes… YEARS!
Well, the kind folks at Wish-Bone are looking to change up that salad rut that I, and many other households, have found themselves in. I gathered 3 of my friends along with their children and we are saying “Bye Bye Boring” and “Hello Happy Salads”! We are taking the Wish-Bone challenge to become more Salad Savvy this summer!
Wish-Bone has provided us with a “Salad Sampler” kit which includes 4 of their newest salad dressings: Bruschetta Italian Dressing, Greek Vinaigrette, Superfruit Berry Vinaigrette, and Mediterranean Italian.
- Spring Mix
- Baby Greens Mix
- Red Pepper
- Red Onion
- Crumbled Feta Cheese
- Almond slices
We’ve documented the salads we created with these dressings below:
Bruschetta Italian Dressing Salad
Ingredients: Spring Mix, Tomato, Red Onion, Croutons and Feta
Our Thoughts: We all felt that the dressing was very mild and the flavor of the basil came through nicely. It had an overall subtle taste for a salad, but one Mom mentioned she could imagine it would be nice if used to season a tomato on bread as well.
Ingredients: Baby Greens Mix, cucumbers, Red Peppers, Feta and Croutons.
Our Thoughts: We would definitely try this dressing again. There was a definite taste of olive overtones in it (not olive oil) which we appreciated.
Superfruit Berry Vinaigrette
Ingredients: Spring Mix, Cucumbers, Red Peppers, Red Onion, Almond Slices, Raspberries, Strawberries and Blueberries.
Our Thoughts: While a nice change, this dressing was our least favorite of the four. The splash of fruit in the dressing was nice but one Mom thought she tasted a bit too much vinegar in it. I would still use this dressing for a fresh change of pace.
Ingredients: Spring Mix, Croutons, Cucumbers, Feta and Red Onion
Our Thoughts: This salad and dressing was the unanimous favorite amongst the ladies! This one tasted the most well-rounded with a nice fresh lemony taste. We could taste the spices but not one thing was over-powering in the dressing.
