I was lucky. I grew up with parents who love to read and, when I was young, read to me. It’s something that I recall even from a young age. It’s something that has stayed with me all these years, and something that I adore watching grow in my children.
My older son is not a fan of songs or singing… but he loves to read. LOVES it. My littlest man is also fond of a story or two, especially at bedtime. I’m looking forward to the Llama Llama Red Pajama Reading Party at Gymboree for Jumpstart’s Read for the Record October 6th as a way to continue to grow that love (hopefully into a life-long obsession).
While I know how important reading to young children is, I was still shocked at the statistic that “1 in 3 children in the U.S. begin kindergarten behind, and most will never catch up. The millions of children in the U.S. living in poverty are even more likely to fall into this statistic, as many grow up in homes without a single book.” Reading is a simple exercise and something so important as a foundation for a child’s education and growth.
