40 Winks with the Sphinx, the Penn Museum’s unique overnight experience recognized by Parade Magazine and the Huffington Post as a “can’t-miss museum sleepover,” makes a great holiday gift. Inspired by ancient artifacts and imaginative conversations, children ages 6 to 12 and their parents can enjoy a real night at the museum!
The 40 Winks with the Sphinx overnight program takes intrepid explorers on ajourney through time and across continents. Crafts, a scavenger hunt, and flashlight expeditions through the galleries connect children ages 6 to 12 and their parents or chaperones in new ways with ancient mummies, hieroglyphs, plus Greek, Roman, African, and Maya artifacts awaiting discovery. Then campers settle into their sleeping bags among rock and royal artifacts of ancient Egyptian culture, sleeping at the foot of the third-largest granite Sphinx in the world, near the 3,200-year-old pillars and gateways from the great palace of the Pharaoh Merenptah. 40 Winks with the Sphinx concludes with a light breakfast in the Museum Café, and time to browse the Pyramid Shop—the children’s gift shop offering toys, games, stuffed animals, jewelry and books about ancient civilizations and modern world cultures. Guests also receive a souvenir patch in the morning that grants them Museum admission for rest of the day, as well as the remainder of the school year.
40 Winks with the Sphinx is $50 per person (adults and children); $40 for Museum members.
Online registration for the 40 Winks with the Sphinx program offers convenience to local or long-distance relatives searching for a one-of-a-kind gift. While on the Penn Museum website, enter the child’s name in the “Write Like an Egyptian” widget to translate it into hieroglyphs, as an Egyptian scribe might have written. Print the result and use it as a gift label to add to the mystique!
40 Winks with the Sphinx sleepover programs begin select Friday evenings at 5:30 p.m. and conclude Saturday mornings at 9:00 a.m. The overnight program is geared to children ages 6 to 12, and one parent or chaperone is required for every five children.
