I was given the opportunity to visit the Academy of Music along with my husband to see eight time Tony Award Winning musical, ONCE.
When we first walked in, it was very non-traditional because we were encouraged to go up onto the stage to take a look around and grab a drink. The stage was set as a bar in Dublin (I can tell you, having been to Dublin in the last 6 months, the setup was pretty perfect–lots of random chairs gathered around and dirty mirrors lining the walls!).
As you may expect, beers were well overpriced at $11 with water at $7. Regardless, it was really neat because about 15 minutes before the show started, the actors came up on stage-all of whom could sing and play instruments-and they began to entertain while people were still grabbing drinks! Very cool.
The story was cute. There was some humor and some nice attempts at humor. The music was good-although not as traditionally Irish as we were expecting. We both agreed that every time the main actor started playing the guitar, we thought “Iris” by Goo Goo Dolls was going to ensue. Not the case-but picture that type of music for the most part.
The female lead was also a good singer. I actually found her somewhat annoying at first (which I think was the intent) but ended up liking her in the end. Overall, I enjoyed the show and I’m glad we went. I thought it was a cute story. If you have the chance to see ONCE, I recommend it!
