Introducing Tech·mom·o·gy Tuesdays! I will review new tech gadgets and report back to you! First up, the Nest Thermostat review.
Some day, I will have a fully automated house. My husband is an automation engineer, so we will have a lot of fun planning it out. But for right now, we got a little taste of home automation when we tried out the Nest smart thermostat.
Installation of the base (according to the hubs) could not have been easier. The wire terminals were compression based which means he didn’t need any tools to wire the Nest. He simply pushed a button to open the terminal, inserted the wires, and closed it. That’s it! Then the Nest itself pops on.
The Nest thermostat immediately starts to learn your habits and preferences allowing it to adapt to your schedule and change the temperatures for you. This can go a long way in saving you money on your electric bill and helping you live more efficiently.
The Nest also detects when someone walks by! It turns on when you pass and this feature also allows it to know when you’re not home. The Auto-Away™ feature turns your Nest to an energy-efficient temperature while you’re away, how cool is that?
My favorite feature is the Nest app. I can’t tell you how many times we’ve gone away for a trip and our house is either too cold in the Winter or too hot in the Summer when we get home because we were trying to be efficient. With the app, I’m able to turn the temperature to a comfortable level before we even get home. Now that’s a welcome!
There are so many more incredible things the Nest can do. From keeping a history of energy usage, to a leaf popping up on it’s screen when the temperature you’ve set it to is the most efficient setting. We’ve already decided to buy our own Nest. It’s not cheap at $250, but the savings will more than make up for the cost.
We were provided a Nest to try out and return to facilitate this review. The Nest was provided by Verizon Wireless, home of Verizon’s 4G LTE network. No compensation was received. All opinions are 100% my own.
