From the moment our little ones were born, our hearts were filled with the most extraordinary, powerful, beautiful and wholly consuming love. And then there were diapers. And spit up. And sleepless nights. And more spit up. From chasing toddlers and scrubbing crayon off the floor to packing lunches and helping with homework, Moms are on duty 24/7. And while every mess we tidy up and every chore we cross off our to-do list is completely worth it, it is important to occasionally make time for ourselves and enjoy some ‘Mom Time’. What is Mom Time, you ask? It’s different for every Mom. It could mean using the bathroom without an audience, enjoying 10 minutes of quiet (i.e. no Mickey Mouse Clubhouse blaring on the TV), or even – gasp! – taking a moment to actually sit down at the end of the day and stare at a miraculously clean, lego-free floor. It could even mean, say, hiding in the closet so you can eat an entire Hershey bar without having to share with your kid. Not that I’ve ever done that…
Yesterday, I was lucky enough to enjoy some Mom Time at Elements Massage in Horsham. Elements Massage is a massage studio that embraces a holistic approach to traditional massage. At Elements, you don’t just receive a ‘swedish massage’ or ‘deep tissue massage’, but rather a highly personalized massage experience that blends the various modalities to effectively address your specific needs. When I scheduled my appointment, Jessica (the manager of Elements and a total sweetheart) and I discussed my problem areas and chronic issues (residual broken tailbone pain, neck & shoulder pain and severe migraines). I really appreciated how thorough and engaged Jessica was as she asked me questions and truly listened to my responses. Based on my specific issues and the type of massage I prefer (deep tissue, baby – bring it!), Jessica felt that Trisa would be the best therapist for me. We scheduled my appointment and my countdown to Mom Time commenced.
When I arrived at Elements, Molly (super sweet and friendly) greeted me in the lobby and brought me a glass of water while I filled out my new client forms. When Trisa walked into the lobby, I admit I was surprised by how tiny she was – like really itty bitty. Could this teeny little woman really get in there and wreak havoc (in a good way) on my muscles? Um. Yeah. Yeah, she could. I mean…damn. But I’ll get to that in a sec. *Side Note: Trisa is awesome and I kinda hope we can be best friends.
Trisa led me to our room, hung my coat, and showed me how to adjust the lighting and music if desired. The room was very serene…and so very quiet. We chatted a little more about my problem areas, my ideal pressure, and what I hoped to get out of the massage. After I undressed, she came back into the room and over the course of the next hour that itty bitty lady proceeded to tear my back up – in the most AH-MAZING way. Trisa gave me more than a massage, she gave me much-needed relief from chronic pain that I’ve just become accustomed to living with. As she worked, she shared with me some fascinating information about musculature, as well as how and why she approaches various issues in the body. Her extensive knowledge of the human body was evident both in conversation and in execution. I loved how she blended various aspects of massage to create a physically satisfying and mentally relaxing experience. I’m pretty sure I cried it was so amazing. Best. Mom Time. Ever.
My overall experience with Elements Massage was fantastic. From the friendly, professional and conscientious staff to the beautiful, clean environment and heavenly – nay, HEAVENLY – massage, I couldn’t have enjoyed myself more. Bonus points for having extra hair ties and York peppermint patties.
