Disclaimer: I was provided Silikids spoons, place mats, and a sippy cup to facilitate this review. All opinions are 100% my own.
I know, I know. Blah blah blah Emily loves silicone kids products blah blah. I’m sure you’re tired of hearing about my love affair with colorful silicone, but seriously….I can’t get enough! When I find an amazing product that is safe for kids AND adorable, I feel that it is my responsibility to share it with my fellow mamas.
So with that, I present to you…..Silikids.
Created by best friends (and Moms) Stacey Feeley and Giuliana Schwab, Silikids began as a search for a safe alternative to plastic feeding products. With nothing available on the market, the women realized that if they wanted certain types of products for their children, they’d have to create the products themselves. Thus, Silikids was born.
I know I’ve said it before, but silicone is amazing. It is naturally non-toxic, hypoallergenic, and is lead, PVC, phthalate and BPA free. Silcone is dishwasher safe and highly durable, making it a no-brainer for any mom of toddlers!
The kids and I had the opportunity to put this into practice when we sampled some Silikids products for this review. We received Silispoons, a Siliskin glass trainer cup, and two Silimaps.
The Silispoons are colorful shovel-like spoons with nubby handles (great for tactile stimulation AND teething). Perfect for kids new to utensils, these little gems helped my son master the art of self-spooning. He also loves chewing on the handle when his teething gums are sore. Two products in one – score!
The Siliskin glass trainer cup is hands down my daughter’s favorite sippy cup. Aesthetically, I find it incredibly appealing. Practically, I love how safe, durable and easy to clean it is. It is a glass cup with a silicone ‘skin’ for protection and grip, with a separate silicone sippy top. The top is so easy to slip on and off, yet it always stays put and never leaks. My daughter asks to use her Siliskin cup each day, and insists on bringing it every where we go.
Silimaps are one of my all-time favorite toddler products. I. Love. These. Placemats. Designed to look (and fold) like maps, Silimaps are thin silicone placemats printed with a map of the USA. As the kids use their placemats, we talk about all the different states and the various places that people we know live. Because they are made of silicone, kids can also draw on the Silimaps with washable markers. A placemat that provides learning opportunities AND entertainment? Yes, please! The main reason I love these placemats, however, is how unbelievably portable they are. Because they are designed like maps, they fold rather than roll up. In the past, we’ve used the placemats that suction cup to the table and roll up to pack. While these function well as placemats, they are a total pain to pack into a diaper bag, especially if you have two! When folded, the Silimap is totally flat and compact. It is so easy to pack two Silimaps into the pocket of my diaper bag (and we all know I like to keep lots of things in my diaper bag). The Silimap also doesn’t need suction cups to stay in place because the silicone is naturally…grippy. It just magically stays put!
Ok, let’s review: Silikids products are non-toxic, hypo-allergenic, BPA-free, educational, durable, portable, practical and adorable.
In case you need one more reason to love Silikids, the company recycles all of its silicone and leftover products. Because silicone is only accepted by certain recycling facilities, Silikids will even recycle your used silicone products for you! Bonus points.
In addition to testing the Silikids products, I also had the opportunity to pick the brains of founders Stacey and Giuliana. These women are amazing!
MM: I’d love a more in-depth look into your backgrounds. Tell me more!
SK: Giuliana started her art career in NYC. First studying graphic design and Art Direction at Pratt Institute, then working her way through the magazine publishing world. Her attention to the cool benefits of silicone happened when she was working as Art Director at Bon Appeitit magazine. Stacey’s career took the path of actor, turned music license agent turned real estate agent. The two friends met the first night Stacey met her future husband, and as a result they affectionately call each other “second husband.”
MM: How did Silikids come to be? What was the ‘light bulb’ moment?
SK: You know the saying: “To do it right you have to do it yourself!” We were two moms with our first young kids and we couldn’t find feeding ware that was a safe alternative to plastic. Not to mention we didn’t want to look at anymore pink teddy bear prints or rainbows… the design esthetic at the time was limited!
MM: What does being a ‘mompreneur’ mean to you, and what words of wisdom would you offer other inventive Moms out there?
SK: It’s so rewarding to see your ideas come to life! Especially when you’re creating things out of the need you want to fulfill in your own families’ life. Being a momprenuer means having another child in the house, and this one is the most demanding one hands down! There’s no slowing down or rest anymore, not there was much before either. But hanging in there and watching your little “idea” grow into something real… well that makes a mother proud.
MM: What vital piece of information do you want our moms to know about silicone?
SK: When it comes to tableware, stuff we put food and drinks in, the basics like glass and ceramic are the best! Those natural elements that have created feeding ware for hundreds of years are indeed the best! We are constantly trying to educate the public about the benefits of silicone because it’s not plastic, but more like glass in it’s make up. We strive to make those awesome basics even better!
