Disclaimer: I was provided 4 tickets to Ringling Bros. Circus Xtreme at the Wells Fargo Center on 2/11/15. All opinions are 100% my own.
I haven’t been to the circus in years, so when the opportunity to see Ringling Bros. Circus Xtreme on behalf of Montco Moms arose, I was beyond excited. My husband and kids had never been to the circus before, and I couldn’t wait to share their first circus experience with them.
When we arrived at the Wells Fargo Center, the sights and smells of the circus greeted us in full force. Cotton candy, popcorn, light up swords, and snow cones in elephant shaped cups brought back cherished memories of going to the circus as a kid. We made our way to our seats just a few minutes before show time and waited for The Greatest Show On Earth to begin. Miller and Maddox knew something big was about to happen, but I don’t think they anticipated the spectacle that was about to unfold before their eyes. The lights dimmed, and I watched their faces brighten as the colorful, sparkling Ringling Bros. clowns and performers entered the arena and the Ringmaster’s voice boomed through the Wells Fargo Center.
I have been to the circus many times before, and it has always been a fun and entertaining experience. But there is something different about Circus Xtreme. With a cohesive storyline and a stronger musical element than circuses past, the production value has skyrocketed. The acts performed one at a time rather than the multiple acts simultaneously performing on the arena floor. This allowed for longer, more in-depth performances that were truly remarkable. While still incorporating the ‘classic’ circus acts like tightrope walkers and clown skits, the pyrotechnics, contemporary music, and use of parkour and BMX stunts put a decidedly modern twist on the traditional circus experience. From the dancing camels to the soccer-playing elephants, the amazing acrobats to the human cannonball, the stunt bikers to the parkour troupe, the level of skill employed in Circus Xtreme is incredible. Each performer (yes, even the Strongman) danced and sang in the large (and stunning) group numbers. I was incredibly impressed with how well-rounded all of the performers were. Ringling Bros. have really topped themselves with Circus Xtreme.
My kids, ages 2 and 10 months, were completely captivated for the entire show. My 10 month-old, Maddox, sat in my lap totally enthralled – pointing to the animals, dancing to the music, and clapping along with the audience. My 2 year-old, Miller, reaaaaaaaally wanted to join the performers on the floor. Luckily, we were able to prevent her from rushing the stage!
As a child, there was nothing more magical than going to the circus, sitting in my Daddy’s lap, eating cotton candy, waving my fiber optic magic wand and watching the elephants, tigers, acrobats and clowns perform incredible feats before my eyes. Then I became a parent, and the circus provided an entirely new experience. Sharing the experience with my children and watching their eyes grow wide with delight as acrobats soared and camels danced…now THAT was truly magical.
Circus Xtreme is at the Wells Fargo Center through February 16th. You can purchase tickets online, and I highly suggest that you do!
