Disclosure: I was provided a complimentary lunch at Alice Bakery & Confectionary to facilitate this review. All opinions are 100% my own.
The Little Ones and I recently visited Alice Bakery & Confectionary in North Wales. Located right on Main Street, Alice is a delicious, vanilla bean buttercream gem of the Philly ‘burbs.
Founded in 2010 by pastry chef and Daddy-of-two Dennis Darr, Alice is a full-service bakery featuring extraordinary desserts, beautiful custom cakes, the most incredible breads that ever existed, and a delicious lunch menu that will make you completely forget about silly words like ‘carbohydrates’ and ‘dieting’ and ‘swimsuit’.
Dennis’ passion for baking began as a child when his Grandmother Alice showed him how to make fruit-filled pastries with leftover baking crusts (adorbs). Dennis’ lifelong dream of owning a bakery led him to Chicago, where he attended the French Pastry School and later worked alongside Oprah’s personal chef, Art Smith. Eventually, he found his way back to Pennsylvania where he discovered the perfect location for his bakery. Luckily, that location isn’t too far from me.
Since its doors opened five years ago, ABC has become a well-loved addition to Main Street. After my visit to the bakery a few days ago, it’s not hard to see why.
The moment we walked in, my daughter caught sight of the stunning dessert display and focused with resolute determination on the gorgeous Devil’s Food cupcakes. Needless to say, our lunch began with dessert…but I’m not complaining. Girl Scout’s Honor, I have never tasted frosting as heavenly as ABC’s. It’s forget-the-cupcake-eat-it-with-a-spoon delicious. I’m actually having trouble writing this because my mouth is watering and I’ve got the shakes.
Next, Dennis served us a bowl of Cream of Portabella soup, or as I call it, the Soup of the Gods. If it weren’t in poor taste, I would have literally tossed the spoon aside, poured every last drop into my mouth and then licked the bowl clean. I sincerely thought about it for a split second, but I didn’t want to set a bad example for my children.
In addition to being a ridiculously talented pastry chef, Dennis also dabbles in mind reading. Knowing that we’d be delighted with anything on the menu, I asked him to surprise me with a sandwich. Dennis intuitively brought out my all-time favorite sandwich (Turkey, Brie, Apple and Honey Mustard), only it was the yummiest version of said sandwich I’ve ever had. Ever. It was paired with a garden salad and Dennis’ house made Soy Sesame Vinaigrette (the Dressing of the Gods). It was one of those moments as a mother where you just really, truly, with all your heart DON’T want to share with your kids.
Though we had started our lunch with dessert, it was only right that we finish it with dessert as well (beach season smeach season). The lovely Karen surprised us with a Pink Lemon cupcake, which was almost too gorgeous to eat. Don’t worry, I got over that pretty quickly. All I can say is…I licked the cupcake paper. Enough said.
Yes, the food is so delicious you want to cry when it’s gone. Yes, the pastries make you want to don yoga pants with an extra stretchy waistband so you can fit that much more in your belly. Yes, the bakery is darling and smells amazing and the insanely scrumptious breads are made fresh daily and everything is perfect. But those things aren’t what truly won me over.
He knew everybody’s name.
Dennis greeted every person that walked through the door by name. And if a new customer stopped in, I guarantee you Dennis knew their name by the time they left. I was so struck by how friendly, considerate, conscientious and observant Dennis and his staff were, that even if I hadn’t been wooed by Devil’s Food cupcakes and aged Gouda breads, I would still be ABC’s newest and most loyal customer.
As Alice’s newest and most loyal customer, I suggest that you drop whatever you’re doing RIGHT NOW and get to North Wales. And bring your yoga pants.
Emily’s Tip: Alice Bakery will be opening a second location in Ambler in just a few weeks! They will launch a new dinner menu, complete with kids’ options!
