I recently met with Christina Fava at the Montgomeryville Giant for a private nutrition consultation. Prior to the consultation, Christina had asked me to outline some of my nutritional goals. I have two children, ages 1 and 2.5, both of whom are pretty healthy eaters. My 2.5 year-old, however, has gotten a little particular with food as she’s gotten older. She is great about eating fruits and veggies most of the time, but lately she has developed a propensity towards some less-than-healthy snack foods (i.e. cookies and sugary fruit snacks). As a family frequently on-the-go, sometimes the more convenient and ‘less mess’ snacks supersede the healthier options when packing up the diaper bag. While I want my kids to eat as healthy as possible, I do NOT enjoy discarded, sticky banana peels on the backseat or yogurt splatters on the window, so foods that are easy to pack and mess-free to eat are the most desirable. And frankly, if my daughter is having a horrific meltdown in the middle of Target because she wants animal crackers, I’m less than inclined to have the ‘Wouldn’t you rather have homemade zucchini chips instead?’ conversation, but I also don’t want to give in and give her crap food every time she throws a fit. With that in mind, I hoped that Christina could help me in my quest to find deceptively healthy snack foods and meal options.
At the appointment, Christina gave me a folder containing recommended dietary guidelines for healthy preschoolers, some super helpful literature about nutrition, coupons (!!!), a meal plan and an assortment of recipes for meal and snacks that would appeal to my daughter, but that also pack a nutritional punch. As we went over the dietary guidelines, Christina suggested lots of great snack ideas that would appeal to my daughter’s fickle taste buds. We also discussed ways that I could enhance the nutritional benefits of my daughter’s favorite meals by making a few simple substitutions. Christina then took me on a tour of Giant’s impressive health food section, pointing out great snack and meal options that were low in sugar and sodium, high in protein and sure to appeal to my picky toddler.
After my meeting with Christina, I was pretty jazzed about my new approach to maintaining a healthy diet for my daughter. So far, she LOVES the healthier versions of her favorite snacks that Christina suggested, and the recipes Christina provided have been a huge success! Overall, the consultation was super helpful, and I love knowing that I have someone right there in the grocery store to answer any questions I may have. The best part? Now my daughter’s meltdowns are about healthy animal crackers!
In addition to the in-store nutritionist consultations, Giant also offers a full schedule of free classes on a variety of nutrition-related topics like gluten-free eating, the benefits of organic food, and healthy meal options for your family. Now that I know about Giant’s super convenient Health & Wellness offerings, I will definitely be taking advantage of them!
