Disclosure: I was provided comp tickets to the Act II Playhouse production of ‘Rainbowtown’. All opinions are 100% my own.
If you’re looking for a wonderful way to spend next weekend with your kiddos, consider making the journey to ‘Rainbowtown’, the current production at Ambler’s Act II Playhouse.
‘Rainbowtown’ tells the story of Queen Annie (Amanda Curry) the good-hearted monarch of colorless, emotionless Greytown. One day after a thunderstorm, Queen Annie spots a rainbow in the sky. The beautiful colors of the rainbow inspire Queen Annie to leave Greytown in search of a new, more colorful location to build her palace. As she searches for a new home, Queen Annie encounters several colorful towns and their emotionally charged citizens (all played by a very clever Amanda Jill Robinson). Somewhere between the immense excitement of Redtown and the surplus of silliness in Purpletown, Queen Annie learns that while all feelings are important, TOO much of one feeling can be overwhelming. It is shortly after this realization that Queen Annie finds herself in – you guessed it – Rainbowtown, where all the feelings exist together in perfect balance.
With an entertaining and well-acted script aimed at the younger set, ‘Rainbowtown’ is sure to be a hit with your kiddos. The show also includes live, original music and ample opportunities for audience participation, including a celebratory dance party at the show’s finale. My kids were so captivated by Queen Annie’s journey to Rainbowtown that when the show ended, my two year-old looked up at me and asked, ‘More please, Mommy?’.
Not only does the show provide opportunities to initiate discussions about colors and emotions, it’s also a fantastic way to introduce your little ones to the theater. Based on the tremendous response to ‘Rainbowtown’, I wouldn’t be surprised if Act II begins to incorporate even more children’s shows in their lineup. My kids and I certainly hope they do!
The final performances of ‘Rainbowtown’ are on April 18th at 11am and 3pm, and on April 19th at 3pm. The show runs approximately 45 minutes. Tickets for ‘Rainbowtown’ are $8 for kids, $10 for seniors and $12 for adults. Tickets may be purchased through the Act II Box Office at 215-654-0200 or at www.act2.org.
