Disclosure: I was provided free admission to Kidchella 2015 at Smith Memorial Playground to facilitate this review. All opinions are 100% my own.
The 2nd annual Kidchella concert at Smith Memorial Playground rocked Fairmount Park last this past Friday. With performances from Alphabet Rockers, Play Date (the lead singer from The Bouncing Souls!!!) and Shine and the Moonbeams, Kidchella 2015 kept the kiddos dancing all night long…well, until bedtime at least. Jeff Bogle of Out With the Kids fame curated the fantastic musical lineup and Philly’s best food trucks were on site to keep everybody’s tummies happy.
Soon after the doors opened, blankets, camp chairs and picnic baskets quickly began to cover the grassy areas at Smith and the amazing smell of food trucks began to fill the air. Alphabet Rockers opened the show with their awesome brand of upbeat, family-friendly hip-hop, followed by a pop rock set from Play Date and a soulful R&B performance from Shine and the Moonbeams. As the kid-friendly acts performed their catchy tunes, hundreds of kids danced, sang along and played on the fabulous playground, tot lot, and Smith’s famous giant wooden slide. My kids were quite taken with the performances, and particularly loved the songs ‘Dynamite’ from Alphabet Rockers, ‘Dance Like a Monster’ from Play Date and ‘Hi Five’ from Shine and the Moonbeams. Truth be told, I’ve been singing ‘Dynamite’ for the last 2 days. That song is seriously catchy!
The food trucks were a great and tasty addition to the event, and were well worth the long lines. Dos Hermanos brought it’s famous authentic Mexican food, Curbside Creamery its gourmet dessert and ice cream and Foolish Waffles its amazing sweet and savory waffles. Being a Southern girl, I went for Foolish Waffles’ Chicken & Waffles. Drizzled in chili honey and topped with cole slaw and jalapenos, this is officially my new favorite meal. Oh. My. Word. It was incredible.
As always, Smith hosted a fantastic event and we can’t wait for next year. Kidchella 2016, here we come!
