Disclosure: I was provided The Okee Dokee Brothers album Through the Woods to facilitate this review. All opinions are 100% my own.
Ok, I just need to get this out of the way. I have a total crush on The Okee Dokee Brothers. Both of them. They’re adorable, they sing like angels, and do cool manly outdoorsy things like canoe up the Mississippi River, hike the Appalachian Trail and chop wood (this last one is purely speculation, but I can’t imagine it’s a far out of the realm of possibility). Plus, they both wear cool hats and look great in plaid. And what’s more appealing than two road-tripping, wood-chopping, cool hat-wearing lifelong friends who write beautiful family-friendly (and did I mention Grammy Award-winning) music together? Not much if you ask me!
Alright, now that that’s out of the way…let’s talk about the music.
As I mentioned previously, The Okee Dokee Brothers are a musical duo out of Minnesota formed by best friends Joe Mailander and Justin Lansing. Specializing in bluegrass and American folk music, Joe and Justin’s music is inspired by their adventures traveling the United States. On Sunday, the kids and I visited the Philadelphia Museum of Art to catch The Okee Dokee Brothers concert courtesy of Art Splash. For the last few weeks, we’ve been listening to the latest (and Grammy-nominated) Okee Dokee Bros album, Through the Woods. I honestly can’t say who was more excited about the concert, the kids or me. For the record, that was mostly due to the music and only partially because of my crush. The boys put on a fantastic show, and my kids (and I) were captivated from start to finish. From the gorgeous harmonies and delightful instrumentation to the entertaining footage of their travels and interaction with the audience, The Okee Dokee Brothers proved that they are more than just great musicians, but tremendous performers as well.
The Okee Dokee Brothers have tapped into something special with their music, and you can’t help but smile when you hear it. Through thoughtful, cleverly written lyrics set to beautifully constructed melodies, The Okee Dokee Brothers become the spokesmen for the magic of adventure, appreciation of nature and simplicity, a humorous approach to life, a sense of humility, the importance of one’s roots and perhaps most importantly, love. These days, it can be hard to find wholesome, thought-provoking, just plain sweet music made by talented musicians that the entire family can enjoy. Luckily, The Okee Dokee Brothers have nailed it, and you’ll find yourself listening to their music long after the kiddos have gone to bed. When you buy the album (which you all should), check out my favorite songs ‘Ruby Jane’, ‘Lighten Your Load’, ‘Walking With Spring’ and the title track, ‘Through the Woods’.
And before you buy the CD (which you should do…did I say that already?) be sure to enter our giveaway below! We’ve teamed up with Joe and Justin to give one lucky Montco Mom a copy of Through the Woods!
