Disclosure: I was provided a Play Date CD to facilitate this review. All opinions are 100% my own.
There was once a time when I wore a lot of black, a lot of safety pins, my hair was black and hot pink, and I spent a lot of time in the tattoo shop. At the time, I listened to a lot of Rancid, The Clash, Sex Pistols and Bouncing Souls. Now I’m a mom of two living in the suburbs of Philadelphia with caramel highlights (thank you Le Papillion!) listening to ‘Let It Go’ on repeat….though I still have a pretty healthy tattoo addiction. However, my new life as a burb mom doesn’t mean I’ve lost all connection to that wild, punky girl of yesteryear. Having transitioned into a calmer, quieter life these days (who am I kidding…I’ve got two toddlers), I was thrilled to learn that Greg Attonito, lead singer for The Bouncing Souls, had made the leap as well. In 2012, Greg and his wife Shanti Wintergate formed Play Date, a dynamic ‘kindie’ music duo with an arsenal of kid-friendly (yet former rocker mom approved) tunes determined to put a smile on your face and a tap in your foot. Long story short, with Play Date in my corner, this mom can still rock….or something like that.
We caught Play Date’s performance at Kidchella 2015 at Smith Memorial Playground in July, and we’ve been massive fans ever since. With fun, clever lyrics and catchy melodies (that get stuck in your head, but not in a bad way), Play Date is now our go-to soundtrack for any trip in the car. Play Date’s albums Imagination and We All Shine will definitely keep your thumbs tapping the steering wheel. My kids particularly love ‘Dance Like a Monster, ‘Great Day’, ‘Rad’ and ‘Days of the Week’ from Imagination and ‘Stevie the Fox’, ‘Colors’, ‘The Owl Song’, and ‘We All Shine’ from We All Shine. My all-time favorite is ‘L-O-V-E You’, a family themed anthem which is guaranteed to make all the moms go ‘awwww’. Needless to say, after the kiddos have drifted off to sleep in their car seats to the sweet strains of ‘Goodnight’, I often find myself singing along to Play Date all by myself. With a family friendly fusion of rock, pop, hip hop and hints of the musical elements that spoke to me years ago, it’s hard not to.
